Douglas was a normal, non-sentient inhabitant of Limbo before Illyana brought him to the Brotherhood's neon party to deal with some spilled beer - and then promptly forgot about him. He was found at the warehouse a few days later by Mort and brought back to the Brotherhood base, where Mort and Eileen have been systematically attempting to train him as a guard-lizard. It hasn't been terribly effective, but he's great about keeping the floors clean.
